Betty’s Journey: How Free Tech Classes Transformed Her Connections
When Betty, a retired nonprofit specialist, first walked into the Tech
Center, she was nervous. Having spent much of her life without modern
technology, she felt left behind in a world dominated by smartphones, social
media, and video calls. But her determination to connect with her out-of-state
grandchildren and long-lost friends motivated her to give it a try.
Through free classes at the Tech Center, Betty learned to maximize use of
photo editing, AI, video chat, and even advancing her skills on social media
platforms. Patient instructors guided her step-by-step, helping her gain
confidence with tools she once found intimidating. Betty’s favorite class was
about using her smartphone’s camera to share photos and videos, a newfound
hobby she quickly embraced.
The impact on Betty’s life has been profound. She has started to explore the
AI world, creating avatars for her grandchildren, a truly hip grandparent! She
reconnected with former colleagues through social media and is looking into an
online book club. Betty’s confidence has soared, and she often shares her
experiences to inspire other older adults to take the leap into the digital
world.
The Tech Center’s welcoming environment and supportive classes have not only
expanded Betty’s skills but also her community. Her story highlights how access
to free technology education can empower older adults, fostering connections
that enrich their lives in countless ways.
Betty says it best: “I feel
like I’ve been given a second chance to be part of the world again. It’s never
too late to learn.”
