Climate Leader Designation from Sustainable CT

The Town of Manchester is proud to announce its award for the Climate Leader Designation from Sustainable CT, which celebrates the Town’s proactive efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate change impacts. The Town officially accepted the award on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in a ceremony that recognized the collective sustainability efforts of municipalities across Connecticut.

“This designation is a testament to Manchester’s dedication to not only sustainability, but to our efforts in building resilience in the community as climate change issues continue to persist,” said Manchester Public Works Director Tim Bockus. “We’ve taken a comprehensive approach to doing this by implementing various initiatives such as complete streets projects to promote walking and biking, hosting electric vehicle charging stations to encourage EV use, and transitioning our streetlights to energy-efficient LEDs.”

Sustainable CT, a voluntary certification program for municipalities in Connecticut, recognizes thriving and resilient communities. As part of this grassroots effort, Sustainable CT provides a diverse set of resources and best practices that towns can adopt to earn points toward various certifications. The Climate Leader Designation is a key component of the program, highlighting municipalities actively addressing climate change challenges.

“I want to thank Town staff for their consistent efforts in working closely with the community and Sustainable CT to ensure we’re meeting our environmental goals each year. This award demonstrates the Town’s commitment to conserving resources, improving public health, and enhancing community well-being for all Manchester residents.” said Town Manager Steve Stephanou.

We invite the community to join us in celebrating this achievement and exploring opportunities for further environmental stewardship. Community members and interested parties can find more information about the Town’s sustainability initiatives on our Sustainable Manchester page.
